AMEN: THE MILLENNIAL WHOOP

Whilst discussing my project with a colleague they mentioned a Youtube video/viral they had seen about the Millennial Whoop (MW) which they though sounded a little like my Amen Brother idea. The is a piece of phrasing, timing and combination of notes that appears again and again in popular music that was first noticed by musician Patrick Metzger who coined the term. It explores the musical science behind it and how it makes new songs sound familiar. It also gives lots of examples from a huge variety of musicians from a variety of genres who have used it in their work.

The film is an interesting one and as it is in a similar theme and constructing a message and communicating a similar idea, pointing out usage of the sound was very interesting. Analysing it here are the elements of it I think I need to consider or could apply to my Amen piece moving forward.

  • The use of on-screen titles to explain what is going on is good but a little clunky. in my work not too sure if I will need to or want to use them but they must be more subtle if I do.
  • I like the use of lots of examples to reinforce the phenomenon. the more the better and a good variety of artists, genres too works well.
  • It is all a little infomercial and with a real documentary feel and a little flat. However it is accessible and aimed at a younger audience in tone and content. I want mine to be much more stylised and visually interesting.
  • Legally they could have got into hot water for the appropriation of all of the clips. this will need looking into but the clips are credited at the end so "fair usage" must have been applied.
  • There is no real narrative element, ideology or emotional hook to the piece. I want to try and tell a story more in mine and construct  a message.
  • I like the idea of keeping it short as it is only one minute 30 seconds long and does not outstay it's welcome. Currently the clip has had over 400,000 views. Perhaps my work could be turned into a viral and it could certainly also live on line.
